Learning within and from Smart Cities

25 Květen 2012

This workshop, the first of its kind, propose itself as a 'think tank' able to foster a reflection on how the way we learn may be influenced and change because of the development of 'smart cities', but also 'smart villages' and 'smart territories'.

From the Far East, to the Americas and to Europe, cities and their surroundings are evolving towards a new dimension in which the info infrastructure becomes an indispensable asset of our life, contributes to the development of info-ecosystems. Such integrated efforts of info-urbanism are expected to produce social innovation and will make people wonder about new forms of smart education.

The virtual infrastructure - web and mobile - will be integrated more closely with the physical landscape incorporating the latter into a complex ecosystem which will bring forward opportunities to learn from everyday life.
Technologies, increasingly embedded into everyday spaces and artefacts, will make the places not only more sensitive but also responsive and, potentially, coevolutionary (TEP - Technology Enhanced Places).

The human, considered in all her/his complexity, will be placed at the centre of increasingly ubiquitous and complex educational contexts and scenarios. The perimeter of the physical space in which the educational experiences develop will become increasingly undefined and characterized by a high density of social interactions.

  • Ecological monitoring and visualization of flows, behaviours, experience's styles and  'smart cities' learning
  • The impact of contextualization, glocalities, identities
  • Educational Ecosystems: from ''intelligence' to autopoietic education (edupoiesis)

EFQUEL Innovation forum - paper submission deadline extended until 30 May

23 Květen 2012

Submit an abstract (250-400 words) by 30th May 2012, by e-mail to: papers@efquel.org

Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full paper by 21st June, 2012.

The review committee will inform authors of final acceptance of the paper by 15th July.

The conference is focusing on the following questions: How can we turn our traditional educational institutions into (r)evolutionary leading organisations? How can innovation be stimulated? It will observe and analyse how open innovation can be used to transform today’s educational institutions. Educational institutions have mostly taken an evolutionary approach to respond to the challenges of the modern world. But the incremental innovation of our educational institutions is not sufficient to cope with the ongoing fundamental transformation of societies. Change in most education institutions has started too late and is executed too slowly to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Only open, disruptive innovation offers higher education institutions strategic choices to overcome long-standing and deeply-rooted orthodoxies and to make them fit for the future. A key issue in this situation is to develop a balanced view on the topic from all perspectives: strategic, pedagogical, managerial as well as technological. We aim to bring in contributions from different domains and disciplines towards open innovation and quality.
