University on a Cloud

02 April 2013

This book, recently published by the Laboratori de Mitjans Interactius (Interactive Media Lab), surveys university presence "in the cloud" and the extent to which different institutions incorporate online learning systems into higher education. The book collects research from two research groups on either side of the Atlantic - the University of Barcelona's Interactive Media Lab, in Spain, and the Federal University of Santa Catarina New Technology Lab (Communic), in Brazil.

Lego Robotics Construction Set

27 March 2013
Lifelong Kindergarten group and LEGO have created a lower-cost, easy-to-use robotics kit that can engage younger children in a wide range of creative activities, called the LEGO Education WeDo™ Robotics Construction Set.
The WeDo kit contains 150 elements including a motor, tilt sensor, motion sensor, LEGO bricks, gearing mechanisms, and easy-to-use software. It also includes a collection of sample projects—everything from an alligator that snaps its mouth shut when anything comes near (using the motion sensor), to an airplane that plays different sounds as you move it (using the tilt sensor). In addition, children can use the Media Lab’s free Scratch programming system to create stories that combine on-screen animations with WeDo constructions, allowing them to integrate virtual and physical worlds and share their stories with other children around the globe. The product is now in production and available through theLEGO Education Web site.

XBlock Courseware

27 March 2013
XBlock, made by edX.org, is for building courseware. It will soon be implemented in the edX LMS, but the pre-alpha XBlock API is currently available so that potential users can make suggestions for changes.
EdX courseware is built out of components that are combined hierarchically. These include components like the video player, LON-CAPA problems, as well as compound components like learning sequences. The second-generation API for these components is called XBlocks, which are in a prototype stage and yet to be developed into an industry standard. How does this differ from existing industry standards like Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) and SCORM? On a high level, XBlocks is a Python language-level API, and it provides sensible defaults for things like storing data. XBlocks could be wrapped up in LTI, and one could make an LTI XBlock. The core reason to write an XBlock is that it is deployable. You can give us the code to an XBlock, and we can embed it in edX courseware. LTI would require you to give us a virtual machine image which ran it.

Identifying Barriers to the Remix of Translated Open Educational Resources

26 March 2013

This article was originally published on the International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning, Volume 14, Issue, 1.

Remix is touted as one of the most important practices within the field of open educational resources (OER). But remixing is still not mainstream practice in education and the barriers and limitations to remix are not well known. In this article we discuss the design and development of a print and web-based booklet created to introduce the topic of OER to schoolteachers. The guide, the first of its kind available in Portuguese, was created through the remix and translation of existing resources available in English. Choosing design-as-remix raised a series of concerns related to licensing, attribution, context, and technical standards. In this article we review the concerns related to culture and inequity within the OER movement, followed by the design choices and procedures, and finally the implications of these issues for the open educational resources movement.

weSPOT: Using Scientific Inquiry in the Classroom

24 March 2013

weSPOT promotes employing scientific inquiry in the classroom, by connecting scientific concepts to personal curiosity, experiences, and reasoning.

weSPOT focuses on inquiry-based learning, in which the learner takes the role of a self-motivated explorer, and provides support for building these skills. The project is aimed at students from ages 12 to 25, and links everyday world experiences to the classroom. Its main objectives are: (a) defining a reference model for inquiry-based learning skills, (b) creating a diagnostic instrument for measuring inquiry skills, and (c) implementing a working environment that allows the easy linking of inquiry activities with school curricula and legacy systems.
