ROLE Software Development Kit
The ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments) project provides technology to support teachers in developing open personal learning environments for their students. It centers on self-regulated learning so as to promote independent learners who can plan their learning process, search for resources, and reflect on their progress.
The ROLE infrastructure, including this Software Development Kit (SDK) enables a learner-centred Personal Learning Environment (PLE) that will empower the user for true lifelong learning across institutional boundaries, integrating learning with other parts of the learner’s social life.
"Open Education" MOOC to begin March 16th
What exactly is Open Education and what does it entail? The Open University (UK) will launch a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) that delves into this expanding realm of openness beginning on March 16th.
There are many different 'flavours' or competing interpretations of what openness in education means. This study unit will explore them over a seven week course, equipping students to understand the issues in open education, to critically appraise the evidence of open education results, and to experience firsthand participation in an open course.
This MOOC is open to anybody and everybody anywhere in the world, providing weekly topics, activities, discussions and resources, as learners actively engage in all aspects of the experience, sharing ideas in forums, undertaking collaborative or reflective activities, and using a variety of social media.

Literary and Historical Manuscripts Online
Manuscripts Online is a crowd-sourced respository of British primary resources that date from 1000 to 1500 A.D. The collection, available through library, archive, university, and publisher websites, amasses an ample supply of literary manuscripts, historical documents, and early printed books central to the study of English literature and history during the Middle Ages.

Open Science Course Sprint: An Education Hackathon for Open Data Day
The future of Open is a dynamic landscape, ripe with opportunities to increase civic engagement, literacy, and innovation. Towards this goal, the Science Program at Creative Commons is teaming up with the Open Knowledge Foundation and members of the Open Science Community to facilitate the building of an open online course, an Introduction to Open Science. The actual build will take place during a hackathon-style “sprint” event on Open Data Day on Saturday, February 23rd and will serve as a launch course for the School of Open during Open Education Week (Mar 11-15).
The day will begin with coffee, refreshments and a check-in call with other Open Data Day Hackathons happening around the globe. The Open Science Community is strengthened by shared interests and connections between people, which we hope will grow stronger through networked events on Open Data Day. The Open Science course sprint at CC HQ will build upon open educational content, facilitate the design of challenges for exploration, and provide easy entry for learners into concepts of Open Access, Open Research, and Open Data. It will be done in a similar fashion to other “sprint-style” content-creation events, with lunch and refreshments provided for in-person participants. DIVERSE 2013: Call for Papers
DIVERSE 2013, is now accepting papers for this leading conference in video and videoconferencing in education, to be held at the University of Osnabruck in Germany, June 26-28.
The conference will be both a showcase and a critical forum on all aspects of visual resources in education through plenary and themed sessions, which will encompass the emergence of new possibilities such as “presence production” for learning, interactive television, virtual reality and computer games techniques, and handheld access to moving images.
