Learning activities

The subjects would print off some worksheets provided for them in PDFs. Some came with MP3s for listening activities.

The worksheets contained exercises they could complete with a pen and a dictionary.

They also received written instructions on how to use Facebook (or other social networks) and Skype (or other VoIP services) to facilitate focused speaking practice using the language from the worksheets.

Subjects were advised to record their speaking practice sessions and listen to the MP3s on their MP3 players at their leisure.

They then moved on to the next lesson and repeated the process with different language and topics.

Learning goals

The main goal was simply to improve the case study subjects English communication skills as quickly as possible using social media tools.

We managed to help a randomly chosen adult  Polish English learner to improve his English communication skills by two levels in around 30 hours of contact.

We managed to help another randomly chosen adult Chinese English learner (who lives and studies full time in Strasbourg, France) to improve by three levels in around 18 hours of contact.

All of our contact time is recorded in our publicly available case study, including recordings of every online spoken event.
