The detailed conference programme with the schedule of plenary and parallel sessions is now available at the EDEN 2013 Annual Conference's website.

Near 100 papers, 50 posters, 17 workshops and 9 demonstrations will highlight the state of art in ICT supported learning in Europe and beyond. A world-class list of keynote speakers will contribute to throught-provoking discussions on the future of learning:

Recognising Excellence

The tradition of awarding the EDEN Conference Best Research Paper will be continued, in collaboration with the Ulrich Bernath Foundation for Open and Distance Learning. Awards will be presented at the Conference Dinner on 14 June.

The final countdown for the 2nd International Conference on "Learning Innovations and Quality: The Future of DIgital Resources" (LINQ 2013) conference has started! Learning Innovations and Quality:

“The Future of Digital Resources”

The main goal of LINQ 2013 is to bring together a variety of academics and professionals in active in the field of Innovations and Quality in Lifelong Learning (LLL) for an innovative exchange of the latest developments in education and training innovations and quality on both a European and international level. Potential points of access to this field include new learning methods and design, Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL), quality standards and certification, human resources development, competences and skills, digital resources, learning materials, and online collaboration and communities.

LINQ 2013 has already attracted submissions from throughout Europe, as well as Asia, America, and Africa. More than 150 researchers and practitioners answered the LINQ 2013 call for papers and projects. This year thus shows a continuation in the high level of interest which made LINQ 2012 such a successful conference in Brussels last year. The Global Headquarters of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Italy will provide an ideal location for LINQ 2013. The first day of the conference will begin with a plenary which will include remarks from prominent keynote speakers. The second day will be divided into four parallel sessions, allowing the chosen project and paper submitters to present their work.

University Credit for Open Online Courses

The California legislature may soon approve a bill that obliges universities to grant credit for online courses offered by other organizations. If passed, it would provide an unprecedented measure of support for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and the companies that provide them.

The move follows on the heels of last year’s state law requiring free online textbooks for the 50 most popular introductory college courses and subsequent creation of a faculty panel to choose materials—comprised of members from the University of California, California State University, and the community college system.

Although it has provoked a flurry of debate, the baseline problem that precipitated the bill is something both proponents and detractors agree on: increasingly overcrowded classrooms. Budget cuts have slashed the offering of requisite courses, and many students have to wait semesters, terms, and even years before completing their degree. For many, this translates into extra tuition fees while delaying entry into the workforce.

Pioneer online instruction providers like Coursera, Inc., Udacity, Inc., and StraighterLine argue that validating their courses would not only solve the full classroom predicament, but level the economic playing field, making education available to the poor. Greater accessibility—whether physical or financial—is one of the key drivers of the open education movement, but the profit that 3^rd party companies stand to gain casts shadows on the degree of altruism involved.

Critics—many of them professors—have raised a storm of questions, especially regarding quality control. Some say there’s no proof yet that massive online courses serve as a substitute, and that they are much less demanding than the real thing. Another concern is that equal access is actually a false sell, because the challenges of self-motivation and study discipline inherent to these courses are precisely the biggest deterrents for first-generation, lower-income, and underprepared students. Add to that the fact that not all students have ready access to fast Internet connections, and the open online education panacea falters just a bit more.

Nonetheless, despite the many questions that have yet to be answered—Who will approve the courses? What role will faculty members really have? Will student financial aid apply to paid online courses? How will the revenue collected by the companies benefit the colleges? The students?—the likely law will place California at the helm in charting Open Educational waters.
