eTernity: European Textbooks Reusability Networking and Operability

29 Enero 2013

The eTernity project is an initiative by the pre-standardization body CEN WS-LT which will explore the needs towards interoperability within the e-Textbook digital marketplace.

The workshop is open for everybody to participate. Your participation is welcomed and free. We are working with key stakeholders such as:

  • Publishers
  • OER contributors
  • Educational institutions
  • Students’ associations
  • Public Policy Makers
  • CLOs, CIOs and CTOs working within educational technology providers
  • Anyone interested in shaping a better future for Europe’s Educational landscape

    CEN WS-LT will formally kick off the project with a one day workshop in January (provisional date 16th of January 2013) in Brussels.

    Virtual and physical meetings will be organised to work towards achieving a common reference framework for European textbook marketplaces by means of three main development phases:

  • Public call for User Requirements Scenarios from a wide range of interested stakeholders
  • Identification and evaluation of existing interoperability standards and specifications, and
    scoping the potential of developing of an abstract eTernity ecosystem
  • Based on the state-of-art analysis, consider developing a shortlist of specifications supporting an
    eTextbook ecosystem. This will be made freely available to public and private initiatives seeking
    guidance on the design and development of truly interoperable textbook marketplaces
  • The open eTernity technical meetings will be announced on this website

The Peeragogy Handbook

21 Enero 2013

The Peeragogy Handbook is a practical guide to online co-learning, a living document that invites comment and invites readers to join the community of editors; the document does not have to be read in linear order from beginning to end.

If you and a group of other people want to use digital media and networks to co-learn together, this handbook is a practical tool for learning how to self-organize peer learning, the so-called “peeragogy.” Material about conceptualizing and convening co-learning — the stuff about getting started — is located toward the top of the table of contents. Material about assessment, resources, use cases is located toward the bottom of the TOC. But you don’t have to read it in sequential order. Hop around if you’d like.

Understanding how co-learning works will help you do co-learning more effectively. So there's material about learning theories that support peer learning or that reveal useful characteristics of successful peer learning. For those who want to delve more deeply into the empirical research and scholarship, we’ve linked to a sister document — a literature review of learning theory related to peeragogy. For those who want to study more deeply about the aspects of peer learning summarized in articles, the handbook provides a list of links to related handbook articles, and a set of resources for further study.

International workshop on Interactive Environments and Emerging Technologies for eLearning (IEETeL 2013)

18 Enero 2013

eLearning is a dynamic research area reflecting on the current requirements of all participants in the educational process for innovative teaching and meaningful learning combining existing knowledge with future perspectives.

The aim of IEETeL2013 is to connect researchers, educators and technology experts giving them an opportunity to share and discuss new solutions, trends and realizations of eLearning environments and the adoption of emerging technologies in educational settings. These will draw the challenging problems in information gathering, processing and usage; development of web-based and mobile services; building intelligent and social-oriented applications in support of flexible, personalized, adaptable, in-demand learning.

European Work Programme 2013 to implement ICT

14 Enero 2013

The objective of ICT research under the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) is to improve the competitiveness of European industry – as well as to enable Europe to master and shape the future developments of these technologies so that the demands of its society and economy are met. You can find more details of the ICT Work Programme 2013.

The EU Member States have earmarked a total of € 9.1 billion for funding ICT over the duration of FP7; making it the largest research theme in the Cooperation programme, which is itself the largest specific programme of FP7 (with 64% of the total budget).

FP7 research activities will strengthen Europe’s scientific and technology base and ensure its global leadership in ICT, help drive and stimulate product, service and process innovation and creativity through ICT use and ensure that ICT progress is rapidly transformed into benefits for Europe’s citizens, businesses, industry and governments.

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) bundles all research-related EU initiatives together under a common roof playing a crucial role in reaching the goals of growth, competitiveness and employment; along with a new Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), Education and Training programmes, and Structural and Cohesion Funds for regional convergence and competitiveness. It is also a key pillar for the European Research Area (ERA).

Technology Enhanced Learning Livinglab for Manufacturing Environments

18 Diciembre 2012

The TELL-ME project (Technology Enhanced Learning Livinglab for Manufacturing Environments) aims to develop and trial in authentic contexts (SME-driven human-centric and service-oriented manufacturing workplaces) an innovative cross-enterprise methodology and IT platforms for continuous education and training in heterogeneous business ecosystems, blending Precision Teaching (PT) lifelong learning and Living Lab (LL) participative co-creation aspects in ways that can address more business needs than traditional training

This responds to several EU 2020 Strategy indicated in several Flagship Initiatives like "An Agenda for new skills and jobs", "An industrial policy for the globalisation era", "Innovation Union" and "Digital Agenda for Europe" and summarised in the two questions below:

  • How can SMEs blue collar workers in less advanced industrial sectors keep the pace of innovation of technologically advanced ones?
  • How can TEL-based training be positioned and improved, in order to have more impact on industrial sectors' innovation and resilience?

Five main challenges have been identified as fingerprints of the TELL-ME proposal:

  • Human-centred manufacturing and the increasing need to consider human factors and workers wellbeing in the production processes;
  • Service oriented Manufacturing and its increasing need to open, breed and govern globalised business ecosystems;
  • Learning Ecosystems are the new frontier of collaborative value networks on a global and cross-sector market;
  • Living Labs of SMEs and their need to constantly develop business-technical-social-market innovation via co-creation and inspirational environments;
  • Learning at the Workplace and its need for fast, punctual and personalized life-long learning that takes account of fluency-driven approaches to training, and trends in using TEL and OER for self-regulated learning.

Holistic Approach to Technology Enhanced Learning

28 Noviembre 2012

Many studies on the role of ICT as a catalyst to change learning scenarios have failed to grasp relevant developments because they were working on the ground of a given set of technology options and codified learning models. If the areas of implicit, tacit and informal learning are not taken into consideration there is little chance to discover fundamentally new forms of learning through ICT.

The HOTEL Support Action aims to contribute to more effective, holistic and faster innovation cycles in European TEL, by increasing quality at the level of the cycle itself and of the different phases foreseen, that can be replicated in the future. Taking inspiration from the "Deming Cycle" model (Plan/Do/Check/Act) the HOTEL project focuses on the design, testing and validation of a new innovation working method for TEL (the HOTEL Innovation Cycle).
The most important element of impact of the HOTEL project will be:

  • To establish a sustainable and replicable working paradigm (the HOTEL Innovation Cycle) to identify new models of learning through ICT, analyse the specific elements of innovation, assess the potential impact at the micro (technology-learning), meso (organizational-learning) and macro-level (policy); present results of the analysis and assessment to a community of innovators, researchers, decision makers; collect the results of field-test and in-depth contextualized proof-of-concept activities;
  • Set up three Learning Exploratorium Labs (one in higher education, one in a corporate setting, one within an international professional network focused on eLearning quality) where the Innovation Cycle can be tested and validated and that will represent a contribution to the European Innovation Partnership for TEL.

The focus of the support action is on adult learners and the ways they use or might use ICT to learn as a structured and fully organized activity, but also as a side effect of work and personal development in many fields.
