The winners of the MEDEA Awards 2012 were announced during the MEDEA Awards Ceremony which took place on 14 November 2012 as part of the Media & Learning Conference in the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training headquarters in Brussels. Speaking at the awards, Mathy Vanbuel, Chairperson of the MEDEA Awards Committee, highlighted the fact that both winners have a really strong narrative element which highlights the importance of storytelling for learning. French entry 'Quand la colère fait tomber les masques' by is the winner of the MEDEA Professional Production Award and the entry And the Oscar goes to ... is the winner of the MEDEA User-Generated Award, a collaboration between two classes from 5th Primary school of Alexandroupolis in Greece and Ecole Primaire de Rolampont in France. This announcement was made during the MEDEA Awards Ceremony which took place on 14 November 2012 as part of the Media & Learning Conference in the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training headquarters in Brussels.
Speaking at the awards, Mathy Vanbuel, Chairperson of the MEDEA Awards Committee, highlighted the fact that both winners have a really strong narrative element which highlights the importance of storytelling for learning. “Narration is increasingly used to capture interest in the learning context, it is a way to keep learners motivated, to encourage them to press forward and to take a real interest in what is going on through their concern for what is happening to the characters in the stories that we tell. Everyone loves a good story, and nowhere is this more evident than in the MEDEA Awards this year.”
This year the Special Prize for European Collaboration was awarded to Historiana - Your Portal to the Past by EUROCLIO - European Association of History Educators, The Netherlands. The prize for Educational Media Encouraging Active Ageing, set up to coincide with the European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations was won by All that Jazz made by Fundación Universidad Carlos III, Spain.
Two additional prizes were awarded: the first, the Special Jury Prize was given to Flying Start made by the University of Leeds, UK. The second, winner of the audience favourite prize, was won by Schoolovision made by schools all over Europe. The other finalists who took part in the MEDEA Awards last night were: Il Girotondo del Tempo made by Hyperfilm srl, Italy; Moving Image Techniques by Christina dePian, Greece; and SignMedia by the University of Wolverhampton, UK.
This year the competition attracted 213 entries from 32 countries. In addition to the finalists, the Organising Committee also announced 15 entries that are Highly Commended.

A key component of ITU Telecom World 2012 is the second edition of the Young InnovatorsCompetition aimed at talented youth aged 18-25. The theme for this year’s competition is “Youth Innovation for Development”. Submissions must be relevant to at least one of the following seven issue areas: Education, Youth Employment, Empowerment of Women, Human Rights, Healthcare, Environmental Sustainability, Transparency, and Cyber Security.

- Do you have an innovative ICT-based concept or project?
- Are you in need of resources to take the next step?
- Are you a social entrepreneur?
If your answer is yes to these questions, this could be just the competition for you. Any solution using innovative ICT to support development, from concepts to mature projects can compete to win!
Applications are invited for two categories:
- Concepts: well-researched and documented ideas that have not yet beenimplemented; and
- Projects: on-going operations showing preliminary results (e.g. prototypes) and in need of support to scale their impact.
Submissions should be made in English via the event website http://world2012.itu.int/young-innovators-competition by July 1st 2012 at 24 hours GMT. Applicants will be able to enter and update more than one submission up to
three times in either category up to the deadline.

The Global Junior Challenge is an international competition rewarding the most innovative projects employing cutting-edge ICT technologies in the field of youth education and training.
The competition, promoted by the City of Rome and organized by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, is held every two years.

The Global Junior Challenge rewards projects in all fields of youth education, not only those addressed at schools. How to present a project?
Since the relaunch of the portal in May 2011, the number of members has increased to over 37.000, a new content management system has been introduced and users have published, shared and discussed opinions in blogs and communities. To celebrate the first anniversary of the new eLearningeuropa.info portal, we are launching a competition on 1 June.
The most active user of the portal between 1 and 30 June 2012 will be awarded a prize.
Our new Kudos points system will make the ranking of users according to their Kudos much more transparent. Log on to the portal, add content and gain points to increase your visibility on the portal. The user with the most points by the end of 30 June 2012 will win a Kindle e-reader.

The EU network 'LANGUAGE LEARNING AND SOCIAL MEDIA – 6 Key dialogues' has launched a new competition: Social media in informal language learning and use.
This competition aims at documenting how a language learner in the Web 2.0 uses social media for language learning in daily life outside formal learning contexts.
All you have to do to take part is participate in an interview and answer questions about social media in informal language learning and use. More than 80 interviews have already been uploaded to the LS6 Vimeo channel.
To boost growth and jobs in Europe, the Digital Agenda for Europe has been identified as one of the 7 flagship projects of Europe 2020, the EU's growth strategy for the coming decade. It "will update EU Single Market rules for the digital era".
The rules of the Single Market established 20 years ago mean we can now travel across Europe without having to show our passports, work and live in another country and find the best deals when shopping online.
The Digital Agenda for Europe extends these rules to the digital world. Too many barriers still block the free flow of online services and entertainment across national borders. The aims are to boost the music download business, establish a single area for online payments, and further protect EU consumers in cyberspace.

As part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the European Single Market, the European Commission has launched a creativity competition for 20-year-olds entitled ‘Generation 1992’. It is aimed at tapping into the views, experiences, insights and expectations of what the single market means to young Europeans today. The competition is open to all European citizens born between 1 January and 31 December 1992. Entrants can submit an original essay, video, photograph, cartoon or smart phone application and can chose to focus on one of four categories: education and citizenship; jobs and entrepreneurship; culture and leisure and consumers and environment.

Run an intergenerational event at your school between 1 March and 29 April 2012 to celebrate European Day of Solidarity between Generations on 29 April 2012.
Then upload photos from your event to the generations@school Panoramio group and share your experiences. Images can be uploaded until 30 June 2012. Among all your entries we will pick the best generations@school projects.
- All participating schools/ classes will receive a Diploma signed by the European Commission
- One prize per EU Member State will be awarded - 27 winners in total.
- These schools will win a voucher of 300€ to buy material needed in order to realize a follow-up project with another school that is not yet involved in the intergenerational dialogue.
The European Commission has declared 2012 the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.
The year is intended to raise awareness of the contribution that older people make to society. It seeks to encourage policymakers and relevant stakeholders at all levels to take action with the aim of creating better opportunities for active ageing and strengthening solidarity between generations.
Within this context the generations@school competition was launched.
We are looking for intergenerational projects that are creative and that have a clear impact on the people involved. A successful event will be an event with lots of conversations, learning and laughter. Maybe you'll even find new and innovative ideas for intergenerational solidarity.
The best projects are often the ones easy to implement and inspiring for others!
Submissions can be made either by a class or by a school.
Schools in any EU Member State, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein may hold events.

With just over 2 weeks to go the organisers of the Media & Learning Conference are delighted to announce that there are now more than 240 people registered from 40 countries. They include ministerial representatives, teacher trainers, educational media producers and practitioners who are all converging on Brussels to discuss trends, share experiences and plan new initiatives in the field of media supported learning.
A series of five online discussions have been launched in the conference community which is open to all. They are: What is the best business model for a learning game? What are the implications of social networking on media and learning? What impact does the move from a literacy culture to a media culture have on learning? What is the best way to create sustainable, media-rich learning repositories? And can media make a difference in supporting early and special needs education? These discussions will continue live during the conference itself, taking place on 24-25 November. You can join in here.
Confirmed keynote speakers for the Media & Learning Conference are Pascal Smet, Flemish Minister for Education and Training, Constantijn Van Oranje, Cabinet member and senior advisor of European Vice-President Neelie Kroes, Peter Adriaenssens, Belgian child psychiatrist, Conor Galvin, researcher from UCD in Ireland, Richard Harper, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, Nikos Theodosakis, Canadian author of “The Director in the Classroom: How Filmmaking Inspires Learning", Pere Arcas, Head of the department of learning programmes and projects at Television of Catalonia in Spain, Lizbeth Goodman, Director and Founder of the SMARTlab Digital Media, Donald Clark, e-learning advisor and Dom Elliott, from YouTube EDU.
The programme includes screening sessions showing excellent uses of media to support teaching and learning, practical workshops fostering hands-on learning experiences, high level presentations and a wealth of opportunities to exchange, learn, interact and network. During the conference we also provide the Pigeon SMS messaging service which enables participants contact one another easily without revealing their own mobile number.
They also plan on having fun and invite participants to try out different devices in the conference Play Area where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and socialise at any time.
The MEDEA Awards Ceremony will be a highlight of the programme and takes place on Thursday 24 November beginning at 18.15. 9 finalists from all over Europe are competing to win one of the two MEDEA Statuettes this year, you can see who they are for yourself and decide who you think should win. The ROLE project has opened an iterative competition on the development of widgets to enchant users and learner communities. Developers benefit from the wide range of the project’s test beds and receive valuable feedback as well as access to future market winning technologies. The winner will receive a prize worth 500€, e.g. a webpad, a smartphone or the entrance fee to exclusive events!
