Online learning in the workplace: a hybrid model of participation in networked, professional learning

31 Décembre 2012

This article by Mary Thorpe and Jean Gordon was published on the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, 28(8).

The design and conceptualisation of online learning environments for work-related, professional learning was addressed through research with users of an online environment for social workers. The core questions for the research were to identify the nature of participation in the online environment, the relationship between online participation and the offline context, and the implications for conceptualisation of online learning environments to support work-related learning. Key areas of the research literature in technology-enhanced and work related learning are discussed in order to position the study, to inform the research methods used and interpretation of the findings. Online participation needs to be understood as a hybrid concept, in that it is a reflection of offline roles, opportunities and pressures, as well as the usefulness, usability and relevance of what is online. Online participation was diverse, from short browsing for information to more reflective engagement that supported movement across the boundaries between roles and areas of work practice and a focus on practice skills and underlying values. Online sites intended to support work-related learning should start from the perspective of the socio-technical interaction network, with its emphasis on building in the social context at all stages in the life of a site.

Technology Enhanced Learning Livinglab for Manufacturing Environments

18 Décembre 2012

The TELL-ME project (Technology Enhanced Learning Livinglab for Manufacturing Environments) aims to develop and trial in authentic contexts (SME-driven human-centric and service-oriented manufacturing workplaces) an innovative cross-enterprise methodology and IT platforms for continuous education and training in heterogeneous business ecosystems, blending Precision Teaching (PT) lifelong learning and Living Lab (LL) participative co-creation aspects in ways that can address more business needs than traditional training

This responds to several EU 2020 Strategy indicated in several Flagship Initiatives like "An Agenda for new skills and jobs", "An industrial policy for the globalisation era", "Innovation Union" and "Digital Agenda for Europe" and summarised in the two questions below:

  • How can SMEs blue collar workers in less advanced industrial sectors keep the pace of innovation of technologically advanced ones?
  • How can TEL-based training be positioned and improved, in order to have more impact on industrial sectors' innovation and resilience?

Five main challenges have been identified as fingerprints of the TELL-ME proposal:

  • Human-centred manufacturing and the increasing need to consider human factors and workers wellbeing in the production processes;
  • Service oriented Manufacturing and its increasing need to open, breed and govern globalised business ecosystems;
  • Learning Ecosystems are the new frontier of collaborative value networks on a global and cross-sector market;
  • Living Labs of SMEs and their need to constantly develop business-technical-social-market innovation via co-creation and inspirational environments;
  • Learning at the Workplace and its need for fast, punctual and personalized life-long learning that takes account of fluency-driven approaches to training, and trends in using TEL and OER for self-regulated learning.

Creativity in learning through Social Computing and Game Mechanics in the Enterprise

15 Novembre 2012

Much social creativity involves human collaboration through and about artifacts that embody collective knowledge resulting from the collaboration. It can be a catalyst to enable European SMEs and large organizations to adopt and sustain new approaches to learning by fostering non-linear and non-standard thinking and allowing promising ideas to be transformed into new processes, products, services or business models

To this end COLLAGE will exploit new synergies between the social Web phenomenon, emerging Web analytics, collaboration and gaming technologies to energize and enable social creativity in learning. It will design, develop and validate an innovative cloud-enabled Social Creativity Service-Set that will support the interlinking of learning processes and systems with (i) social computational services for inspiring learners,

(ii) social affinity spaces for leveraging expression and exploration, and (iii) social game mechanics for supporting social evaluation and appreciation of creative behaviour.

The COLLAGE service set will be applied to enhance creativity in the learning processes of: FIAT SEPIN, which provides training to the Fiat Group and its automobile ecosystem; CEDEP, the executive education consortium; and WAAG, the creative technology society. COLLAGE will aim to generate:

  • Economic impact by enabling SMEs and large organizations to capitalize on the creative capabilities of their employees through new value creation.
  • Technological impact by advancing leading edge technologies (context-aware computing, web analytics and social computational systems) towards creativity support.
  • Impact on TEL by providing an open-source service-set for social creativity able to mash-up with existing learning processes and solutions.
  • Scientific impact by advancing research in prominent research areas such as creativity models for learning, game-based learning and social recommender systems.
