The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)

30 Balandis 2013

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is an ambitious project launched in April 2013 with the aim to bring together and make freely available to the world the resources from libraries, archives and museums across the United States.

The DPLA offers a single point of access to millions of items, from photographs to manuscripts, books, sounds, moving images and more. Users can browse and search the collections by timeline, map, format, and topic; save items to customized lists and share their lists with others. Users can also explore digital exhibitions curated by the DPLA’s content partners and staff.

The DPLA aims to expand this crucial realm of openly available materials, and make those riches more easily discovered and more widely usable and used, through its three main elements:

  • First, an easy-to-use portal where anyone can access collections and search through them using novel and powerful techniques, including by place and time.
  • Second, a sophisticated technical platform that will make those millions of items available in ways so that others can build creative and transformative applications upon them, such as smartphone apps.
  • Third, along with like-minded institutions and individuals the DPLA will seek innovative means to make more cultural and scientific content openly available, and it will advocate for a strong public option for reading and research in the twenty-first century.

The LibrarySchool

06 Spalis 2011

The LibrarySchool initiative was started some years ago within the world of the public libraries. In a society in transition, and in a time where more has to be done with less, the LibrarySchool wants to offer a for ‘high potentials’ within the library sector to develop new products. Initiator Bruynzeels hopes the community will become ‘a breeding ground for new ideas and innovations, where everybody learns from each other and is student and teacher at the same time’. The LibrarySchool will train future innovators but is also a community where students and colleagues share knowledge and gain new insights and so take library innovation forward. By establishing a direct link with everyday library practice, the School contributes to enhancing the innovative capacity of the sector as a whole.

The Difference that Makes a Difference: an interdisciplinary workshop on information and technology

06 Birželis 2011

As we move further into the ‘information age’, we need to make the bridge between information of the information technologist and understanding of information in other disciplines. As researchers and practitioners in diverse fields grapple with an understanding of information – what it is, how it can be modelled and tools for coping with it – now more than ever is the time to share insights and bring some clarity and coherence to these differing perspectives.

Each session focuses on the way in which information is conceptualised within a different set of disciplines – philosophy, science, business/education and social science. In each case, the relationship between technical disciplines and these other fields is taken to be paramount. The goal of the workshop at each stage is to create conversations across disciplines, but especially between technical and non-technical disciplines.

Europe's New libraries Together In Transversal Learning Environments

09 Spalis 2008
It will focus on the contribution to be made through informal learning settings in libraries to lifelong learning, combating digital illiteracy and social exclusion, paying special attention to gains achieved through the applications of ICT.

ENTITLE is a multilateral project under LLP KA4 Dissemination and Exploitation of Results, designed to support and extend the progress made to date by Europe’s public libraries in supporting learning for all age groups and sections of society, by disseminating, consolidating and enhancing the work of key existing networks, projects and initiatives in this area.

An important question for the libraries community and their partners in the formal and non-formal education sectors relates to the question of the role which libraries can play in delivering agendas.

Public libraries have a number of natural advantages including: their strong roots in local communities, a tradition of partnership with schools and provision of learning-oriented services of various kinds for children; and an increasingly established role as part of Lifelong Learning ‘landscape’. There is a strong political assumption, both implicit and explicit, that informal/non-formal learning organisations such as libraries have a vital job to do by supporting individual learners’ needs, providing them with choices and flexibility, helping people to continue and return to learning, enabling adults to get a job or qualification, signposting and inspiring people to take up other courses, helping children to learn and supporting schools in diversifying children’s experiences.

The specific case for investment in this area needs to be demonstrated more fully, conclusively and measurably to policy makers and funders in the many and various national and local environments across Europe. Exploitation of project results, deployment and mainstreaming of innovative activities and services remains inconsistent across EU member states as whole. Even within many member states effective co-ordination in support of nation-wide deployment is lacking.

Libraries themselves need to embed more thoroughly into their policies an elearning culture and to find ways of measuring and demonstrating their impact on people’s learning. A greater effort to spread awareness of the results of successful initiatives across Europe in addition to the development of a framework which will help to convince education and cultural policy makers that Europe’s libraries have a key role and to determine where their major value lies in delivering new learning agendas appears essential in order to ensure the full exploitation of this valuable resource.

The main objectives of this project will therefore be:

  • to identify, describe and disseminate the many instances of good practice, specific services, tools and approaches used for learning in public library settings, building on work conducted under a number of different actions, in order to support the multiplication and mainstreaming of these activities and to enable a fuller understanding of their contribution to Europe’s learning agendas, backed up by recommendations to Member States and the EU for supporting and extending the contribution of this part of the informal sector to lifelong learning policies and actions.
  • to provide an evidence-based framework for further and wider comparison and exploitation of these results within and between countries, especially where this relates to impact on learners, with potential for future use in the context of comparative research studies.

The key results of ENTITLE will include:

  • the production of guidelines and recommendations; the establishment of a web-based dissemination environment for guidelines, recommendations and case studies;
  • consultation and the promotion of innovation via a series of national workshops; the establishment of an impact assessment framework which will contribute to the comprehension of the whole learning sector of the specific contributions which are being and can be made by libraries;
  • provision of a basis for future comparison, experience sharing and assessment of progress.

These results will be valorised and endorsed by means of a Final Conference for policy makers.
