Adolescents’ perception about their learning through their use of social media

There is no doubt that social media has become the utmost important “in thing” for adolescents. This study aimed to understand adolescents’ emic(self-reported) practices in social media, and the type of learning they think is possible there, through their perception of their own authentic experiences. The preliminary results showed that adolescents were not aware of the different instances of learning while experiencing them in social media.

As educators, parents and citizens, this issue touches all of us. We hear a lot about the mistakes adolescents do with social media use and misuse, but we wondered about how they learn with social media. We figured that if they like it so much and are so motivated to learn how to use it, we could learn a lot of valuable lessons we could transfer to the classroom. If you read this short article about our preliminary research results and you have questions, comments or ideas to suggest, let us know! We look forward to pushing this idea further!
