Learning technologies are facing the challenge of establishing standards to develop learning contents on a large scale.
The Learning Technology Standards Committee of the IEEE promotes standards for Web-based learning technologies to be developed.
e-Learning allows content to be custom-assembled and delivered to learners according to their own personal pace and need. There are many different e-Learning platforms and the key resides in providing technical means for educational content to be easily shared across multiple learning delivery environments.
Internet search tools allow users to retrieve documents and information using structured metadata. Standardized metadata will allow learning contents to be indexed and then shared in such a way that all interested users can take advantage of a common base of learning contents.
The European Commission supports major research projects in the field. ARIADNE is releasing its revised Metadata recommendation (ARIADNE).
An important semantic enhancement is now built into the ARIADNE Knowledge Pool system under the form of a completely restructured and enriched Disciplines/Sub-disciplines Table, available immediately in four languages.
